USDA TO DONATE AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES FOR SCHOOL FEEDING IN MOLDOVA

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16, 2005 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced that it will donate 7,080 metric tons of commodities valued at $4.6 million to International Partnership for Human Development Inc. (IPHD), a private voluntary organization, for a child education and nutrition project in Moldova.

The donation includes 5,320 metric tons of bread flour, 900 tons of pinto beans, 500 tons potato flakes, and 360 tons of vegetable oil.

IPHD will directly distribute 6,080 tons of the donated commodities for a school feeding program benefiting 174,713 school children. IPHD will also monetize 1,000 tons of bread flour to provide additional funding for the continued promotion of parent–teacher associations and other community support groups, and for repairing school kitchens. By directly distributing the commodities, IPHD will help reduce child hunger and increase school attendance in Moldova.

The donation will be made under the McGovern–Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, administered by the Foreign Agricultural Service. The supply period for this donation is fiscal year 2005.

The McGovern–Dole program provides for USDA donations of agricultural commodities to promote education, child development and food security for some of the world’s poorest children. This year, USDA expects to provide 112,000 tons of U.S. commodities to 15 countries under this program.
