Memorial Day at the Allied Museum
May 28th, 2007 by Office of the SpeakerSpeaker Nancy Pelosi and a bipartisan Congressional Delegation today commemorated Memorial Day with U.S. Marines and retired veterans at the Allied Museum in Berlin, Germany. In honor of America’s fallen soldiers, a Marine Color Guard presented the colors of the United States and Germany during a moving ceremony on the grounds of the museum.
“On Memorial Day, we remember and pay tribute to our fallen heroes, thank our men and women in uniform and renew our commitment to them and to their families,” Pelosi said. “It is an honor to pay our respects to America’s brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
The Allied Museum was established in 1995 and officially opened in 1998, the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of the Berlin Airlift. The U.S. Government and Embassy have played and continue to play an important role in supporting the museum and its projects. The museum is located on former U.S. military grounds along Clayallee in southwest Berlin, housed specifically in the former Base Library and the “Outpost” movie theatre.
“Being with American Marines on Memorial Day at the Allied Museum reminds us that our soldiers are bravely risking their lives in every corner of the globe, but being here also underscores the fact that any place where our Marines are is a special place,” concluded the Speaker.
Members of the bipartisan Congressional Delegation joining Pelosi at the ceremony were Congressman David Hobson of Ohio; Ed Markey of Massachusetts; Congresswoman Hilda Solis of California; Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin of South Dakota; Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon; Congressman John Larson of Connecticut; and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri. The delegation is in Europe to meet with leading scientists and political leaders working on solutions to combat global warming.
