THE TREASURY BUILDING
THEN AND NOW

Now, again responding to the needs of the Department and its employees, the Treasury Building is in the middle of the most comprehensive rehabilitation in its history. The Treasury Building and Annex Repair and Restoration Program (TBARR) will transform our workplace into something that will remain dynamic for another century or more. The very fabric of the building is being repaired where necessary, spaces are being configured to meet the demands of the twenty-first century, and the detritus of over a century is being swept away. The result of this massive endeavor will be a new Treasury, an office building for the future that honors the legacy of its past.

This 1996 photograph, taken immediately after the fire, shows the glory of the marble Cash Room, on the second floor of the north wing, reflected in the standing water on the floor.

This present-day photograph shows the headway TBARR has made toward restoring the Cash Room to its former splendor.

This present-day photograph shows what was the Media room, on the fourth floor of the north wing, stripped down to its brick walls and ceilings in preparation for its new role as a Teleconferencing room.

This photograph of the new, highly organized, system of wiring conduits and air-conditioning and heating ducts that will be the infrastructure for the modernized Treasury.

This present-day photograph shows the work in progress to modernize and restore the offices on the fifth floor.
