This project will address local and sub-regional planning as well as building capacity for the village consortium. The major objectives are to develop a community capital and land use plan for Chignik Bay, create organizational strategies in sharing resources and implment a management support system to improve and enhance the use of human and fiscal services. In response to declining traditional practices among youth in the community, the Inuit Circumpolar Conference of Alaska will work to provide youth a renewed sense of cultural pride and encouragement to participate in traditional self-sufficiency. To accomplish this, ICC will hold 5 workshops, and complete a 45-minute educational digital video on the Inuit's role in facilitating seccessful whaling seasons. Project Summary |
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska will develop the Sitka Tribal Tannery as a means to protect shellfish resources and to ensure that animals hunted in the region by tribal and non-tribal hunters are processed for use by the Tlingit artists. Tribal tannery technicians will be trained to provide quality professional tanning services to tribal and non-tribal hunters and to donate skins for use by hunters and artists to create traditional Tlingit fur and skin based artwork. This project is scheduled to be completed within 17 months from the date of award. |

Social and Community Development for Community Reindeer

Project Summary |
This grant will leverage USDA and Inter-Tribal Bison Co-op funding by laying the groundwork for managing a buffalo herd and by providing interim production support. ANA funds will be used to 1) set-up a new farm as an operational buffalo farm for plains Buffalo; and 2) develop Tribal co-management capabilities for the reintroduction of Wood Bison (once native to this area) to the Yukon Flats area near Stevens Village. This project is scheduled to be completed within 12 months from the date of award.
