FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Harvey Fuson--P894219 NEWCO VALVES July 7, 1997 Made In The USA Policy Comment Dear Sir/Madam: The article, “Made In The USA,” diluted as it so eloquently stated, is reflected in “Honest Labeling,” which has been and still is in the hands of those who misrepresent their product for personal and business gains. The examples used are related to retail items only, (shoes, bicycles, lawnmowers) and not to the Industrial Consumer World of Energy, Petrochemical, Marine, Pulp & Paper etc. It has been impossible, so far, to explain how identification with markings of origin, conveniently, either fall off or are removed to give the impression of “Made In The USA.” This allows material from off shore to be sold (knowingly) at lower prices causing ligitament off shore manufacturers excess problems. Your article also alludes to products manufactured within the USA borders using imported parts and being so marked as to the percentage of imported content. How does one claim to use import parts, assembling the product in the USA (which still does not include Mexico & Canada) when in fact the entire product comes in fully assembled from over seas, with claims of being put together in North America and being passed off as “Domestic,” or made in the USA. In my opinion, what is taking place is Fraud, which is a crime. In order to make “Made In The USA,” meaningful, enforcement of existing laws already in place would be a good start for an issue which is being greatly abused.
