South Dakota State Profile and Resources
|
South Dakota lies in the Upper Midwest and is divided into east and west by the Missouri River. Western South Dakota is well known for the Black Hills (the highest mountains east of the Rockies), the Badlands and Mount Rushmore. The largest cities are Sioux Falls, located on the eastern side, and Rapid City on the west. The capital, Pierre, is centrally located on the Missouri River. South Dakota is home to nine federally recognized Indian tribes and over 8% of the state's 754,000 residents are Native American. Thirty-four of South Dakota's sixty-six counties are designated Frontier (based on less that 7 persons per square mile). Twenty-six percent of the state's population lives in frontier counties. Tourism, agriculture and manufacturing are the mainstay of the state's economy. |
