Underground Testing

DESCRIPTION: Mining in Rainier Mesa is an around-the-clock operation on the Nevada Test Site. Shown is an instrumentation alcove in P-Tunnel during the early stages of mining. Diagnostic equipment will gather scientific data from weapons effects experiments in less than a millionth of a second. The data will be transmitted to the portal of the tunnel and then to the Control Point. The equipment will be recovered and reused in other tunnel tests.
