Seeing the Economic and Environmental Impact of Global Warming
May 28th, 2007 by Rep. Hilda SolisI am so privileged to be participating in this trip and to have the opportunity to see firsthand the economic and environmental impact of global warming. The information we gather on this trip will be very valuable as Congress considers legislation to address global warming.
Our first stop was in Greenland. It was very cold – the temperature was around 27 degrees. Greenland’s beauty is remarkable and hard to describe in words. It was disheartening to see Greenland’s glaciers, so magnificent in height, melting away.
While in Greenland, we met with leading scientists at Swiss Camp on the Jakobshavn Glacier. We asked them about the work they are conducting there and their findings. Scientists from NOAA, NSF, and various universities are in Greenland trying to learn more about global warming from the melting glaciers.
During our visit to Jakobshavn Glacier, we met up with Anderson Cooper of CNN who was there reporting on the state of glaciers.
We’re headed to Germany next, where we will meet with political leaders to discuss an international solution to this global crisis.
We took lots of photos to share with you. They’ll be posted on the Speaker’s website and my website, so please check them out.
More to come. Stay tuned.
