SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- State and federal assistance to Californians affected by the December-January severe storms and flooding has reached more than $35 million, state and federal officials announced today.

As of April 4, the end of the 60-day registration period established when President Bush declared a major disaster for California on February 3, 2006, 5,124 people registered for federal and state assistance..

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster housing assistance grants totaling $4.5 million have been approved for 1,671 households in the 13 counties declared eligible for individual assistance. An additional $1.3 million in federal and state funding has been approved for 564 households to meet other disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other sources.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved low-interest disaster loans totaling more than $22.8 million for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.

For those who registered during the 60-day period, FEMA’s Helpline –1-800-621-3362, or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585- – remains available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, to help registrants that have questions about assistance programs, need to update their registration information or need referral to other assistance programs.

More than $6.7 million has been approved by FEMA and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to reimburse local government agencies for eligible disaster-related costs under the Public Assistance Program. Public assistance reimburses for eligible disaster related emergency protective measures, debris removal and repair or restoration of infrastructure.

The following counties were declared eligible for the PA program: Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Trinity, Yolo and Yuba
