SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Starting Friday (Feb. 24), hours to register for disaster assistance will be shortened, state and federal recovery officials said today.

Starting Friday, the registration telephone lines will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and will not be available on Sundays.

“Homeowners, renters and business owners interested in federal and state disaster assistance must register with FEMA by calling the toll-free numbers or online at www.fema.gov, even if they’ve already reported their losses to city or county officials,” said Henry Renteria, director of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and state coordinating officer for the disaster recovery. “We want to make sure everyone who may be eligible for assistance registers.”

Since the federal disaster declaration on Feb. 3, more than 2,800 Californians who suffered damage in the December-January floods have registered for disaster assistance, either online at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. The deadline to register is April 4.

OES coordinates overall state agency response to major disasters in support of local government. The office is responsible for ensuring California’s readiness to respond to and recover from natural, manmade and war-caused emergencies and for assisting local governments in their emergency preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery efforts.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
