As summer gets into full swing, and the hot temperatures force us to stay indoors, it might be just the right time to learn some new skills. The NN/LM GMR is proud to announce a new class Can You Hear Me Now: How to Make a Podcast. This class was developed by KK Jiang at the NN/LM South Central Region.
This course has been approved for 2 or 3 hours of Medical Library Association (MLA) Continuing Education credits. For more information about the class, please go to: Can You Hear Me Now: How to Make a Podcast.
If you are interested in hosting this class at your institution free of charge, please contact Max Anderson at max@uic.edu.

The world of library resource sharing is undergoing a period of change. Electronic journals and freely available content like the material in PubMed Central are contributing to a decline in demand for interlibrary loan service as it has been traditionally defined. In response, many libraries are changing the way they do business. (more…)

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) makes it easy to link directly to MedlinePlus®, the consumer health database that is free online. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations.

A new search offering by Google has been implemented into the pages of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Greater Midwest Region (GMR) website. This new tool limits searching to only the web pages of the GMR instead of the entire Network. This new feature helps users to focus on information from and about our region.
The search banner is modified to read: GoogleTM Custom Search.
Check it out by going to the home page of the GMR: http://nnlm.gov/gmr

I work in a small office without an on-site library or technical support. I had to borrow equipment from the other departments in my building for conference calls, scanning and teaching. I requested equipment in my Technology Improvement Award application that would allow me to be more independent and be able to take “my show” on the road whenever I wanted. (more…)

At my hospitals, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center/St. Charles Mercy Hospital/St. Anne Mercy Hospital, the library does not have its own server, technical support people, or web designer. We get good support for PC breakdowns, but we are far from the primary client. Hospital financial operations, patient care functions that include automated medication systems (Admin-Rx) and electronic health records, radiology archiving, and online access are among the other client groups vying for our Information Services. That’s why I use a work-around to help our users obtain access to our resources. (more…)
