THROOP HOSE COMPANY #2 RECEIVES $109,782 FEDERAL GRANT
Rep. Kanjorski Champions Grant for Operations and Safety
THROOP, P.A. - Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (PA-11) today announced that the Throop Hose Company #2 in Lackawanna County received a $109,782 grant through the Fiscal Year 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Fire Administration. The funds will be used to purchase a vehicle exhaust removal system to ensure better air quality in the fire house, updated gear for the firefighters, air packs containing oxygen, and new pagers.
The Throop Hose Company #2 is a volunteer based Engine Company that helps to protect the 4,010 residents around Throop.
"We have been trying to receive this grant for years and it is because of the help of Congressman Kanjorski that we are now able to receive this funding," said Christine Hartshorn, Secretary and firefighter at the Throop Hose Company #2. "This grant will go a long way to improve our firefighters' safety and aid in our operations."
"I am pleased that such a deserving group of firefighters received this generous grant," said Congressman Kanjorski. "The firefighters at the Throop Hose Company #2 continuously risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of the people around Throop. With the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, the volunteers will have the opportunity improve and update their operations and safety to ensure higher standards of public and firefighter safety."
The purpose of the AFG program is to award grants directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations. These grants provide first responders with the means to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as first responders. Nationally, the AFG awards, which will be distributed in phases, will ultimately provide approximately $490 million throughout the country.
