HANOVER TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES $475,000 FEDERAL GRANT

Rep. Kanjorski Champions Grant for Quint Fire Truck

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, P.A. - Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (PA-11) today announced that the Hanover Township Fire Department in Luzerne County received a $475,000 grant through the Fiscal Year 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Fire Administration.  The funds will be used to purchase a quint fire truck, which is a combination ladder truck and pumper.  The truck will replace two older fire engines.

The Hanover Township Fire Department protects the 12,000 residents located within Hanover Township.  The fire department operates out of six fire stations located throughout the township providing fire suppression and rescue services. The fire department is comprised of over 50 volunteers in addition to a paid driver at each station on weekdays.

"The quint fire truck is desperately needed for the fire department.  We received a major grant which is a huge asset for Hanover Township and the surrounding communities," said John Sipper, Hanover Township Manager.  "We greatly appreciate the help and assistance of the Congressman to secure this funding."

"It is a testament to the hard work of the firefighters in Hanover Township that they received such an incredibly generous grant.  This is one of the largest grants that a fire department in Northeastern Pennsylvania has received," stated Congressman Kanjorski.  "The firefighters at the Hanover Township Fire Department put their lives in danger to protect the people of the surrounding communities.  With the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, the volunteers can purchase a multifaceted truck that will provide enhanced features to ensure higher standards of public and firefighters safety."

The purpose of the AFG program is to award grants directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations.  These grants provide first responders with the means to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as first responders.  Nationally, the AFG awards, which will be distributed in phases, will ultimately provide approximately $490 million throughout the country.
