San Francisco, CA -- Federal, state, local and voluntary agencies are working in partnership to help Big Island residents following the recent storms and flooding. The following is a summary of ongoing response and recovery efforts for the week of December 18-22. State Civil Defense (SCD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will update this information weekly.
- Nearly 1,700 flood victims have registered for assistance through FEMA's toll-free Teleregistration number as of close of business, Thursday, December 21, 2000.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $4.2 million in low-interest disaster loans.
- To date, over 900 FEMA temporary disaster housing checks totaling $1.9 million have been issued to flood victims requiring rental assistance or minimal repairs to their homes.
Over 1,200 flood victims visited the Hilo Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) to seek information. The center closed last Friday, December 15.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available to eligible applicants impacted by the October 28 to November 2 storms and flooding on the Big Island through the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
Residents of the Big Island who were affected by the disaster may register for assistance until January 8, 2001, by calling the toll-free FEMA Teleregistration number, 1-800-462-9029. Speech- and hearing-impaired call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LINES WILL NOT BE IN SERVICE ON CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR'S DAY.
