"William Penn and the Indians" - William Penn is shown at center with the Delaware Indians at the time of the Treaty of Shackamaxon. This treaty formalized the purchase of land in Pennsylvania and cemented an amicable relationship between the Quakers and the Indians for almost a hundred years. COMMITTEE ON HOUSE ADMINISTRATION ALLOWS TAXI REIMBURSEMENT

Washington, DC (April 3, 2008)  The Committee on House Administration changed existing House regulations in order to improve safety for House staffers who travel to work by carpool, mass transit, or anything other than a single-passenger car.

The regulation change provides that, when they are required to work late and travel home is not safe, or sometimes not possible after Metro operating hours, employees can be reimbursed for their taxi fare, pending supervisor approval.

The employee will fill out an Alternate-Ride-Home Form, which will be made available on HouseNet. The employing authority will sign off on the validity of the expense in the course of approving the expense voucher.

“Too often we ask staff to stay late the night before a bill must be considered, or to negotiate conference reports through weekends,” said House Administration Chairman Brady. “Every reasonable effort should be made to ensure their safety when traveling home,” Brady added.
