Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Friday, 17 October 2008 |
The importance of linking SRH and HIV and AIDS is now widely recognised. The majority of HIV infections are sexually transmitted or are associated with pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding. The risk of HIV transmission and acquisition can be further increased due to the presence of certain sexually transmitted infections (STI's).
In addition, sexual and reproductive ill-health and HIV share root causes, including poverty, limited access to appropriate information, gender inequality, cultural norms and social marginalisation of the most vulnerable populations. The international community agrees that the Millennium Development Goals will not be achieved without ensuring access to SRH services and an effective global response to the HIV epidemic.

Tuesday, 07 October 2008 |
The Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+) and the World AIDS Campaign are proud to announce the start of their joint programme Keeping the Promise of HIV/AIDS Universal Access.
The UK Department of International Development (DfID) will support GNP+ and World AIDS Campaign through its Governance and Transparency Fund (GTF) for 5 years for a total of GBP 4,099,669 (EUR 5,176,755; USD 7,558,739).
The programme is the result of a long standing partnership between GNP+ and the World AIDS Campaign. Together the coalition has many years of experience in advocating, campaigning, skills building, mobilizing and working with networks. Most joint campaigning and advocacy has been directed at improving the governance of institutions and governments, holding them accountable with the aim to increase their responsiveness to the HIV pandemic.
“From the perspective of people living with HIV (PLHIV), this GTF-funded programme is designed to facilitate the collection of evidence in communities of human rights abuses, stigma and discrimination and the degree to which the greater involvement of people living with HIV (GIPA) has been implemented,” stated Kevin Moody, International Coordinator / CEO of GNP+. “This evidence will become the basis for campaigning, advocacy and policy development at country, regional and international level."

South Africa: TAC welcomes appointment of new Health Minister |

Thursday, 02 October 2008 |
The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) welcomes the appointments of Ms Barbara Hogan as the Minister of Health and Dr Molefi Sefularo as the Deputy Minister of Health. We congratulate President Motlanthe for making these excellent appointments.
We are confident that Hogan has the ability to improve the South African health system. She has been one of the few Members of Parliament to speak out against AIDS denialism and to offer support to the TAC, even during the worst period of AIDS denialism by former President Thabo Mbeki and former Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. 0n 14 February 2003, she received the TAC memorandum to President Mbeki for a treatment plan. She was removed as Finance Portfolio Chairperson by Mbeki in part for her stand on HIV/AIDS. She has a reputation for being hard-working, competent and principled.
Hogan has a long record of struggle for human rights. Twenty-seven years ago, she was detained and tortured by the apartheid security Police. She was tried for treason as an ANC member and spent eight years in prison.
Dr Sefularo, during his tenure as MEC for Health of North West Province, supported ARV rollout and the implementation of the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) in the province.
