Call For Applications
Course Development Award

The NN/LM SCR is accepting applications for the Course Development Award. The purpose of this award is to develop classes that meet the needs of the members of the NN/LM SCR and to enable Network members with expertise to share knowledge and skills with colleagues and enhance the NN/LM SCR education program.

In 2004, the NN/LM SCR conducted a survey of Network members to determine what courses members would like to have developed by the NN/LM SCR and taught throughout the Region. The results of the survey can be found at: http://nnlm.gov/scr/training/class_question_results.htm. The NN/LM SCR would like to utilize the expertise of individuals within the Region to create in-depth classes. Appropriate Continuing Education (CE) credit will be obtained for classes created through this award, and the classes will be taught by the class developer and by NN/LM Coordinators.

The NN/LM SCR encourages all interested applicants to review the Guide for NN/LM SCR Awardees: http://nnlm.gov/scr/outreach/subcontractorsguide.html.

Eligibility

Individuals who live within the NN/LM South Central Region (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and are affiliated with an NN/LM SCR Network member institution. Network membership is free and open to institutions interested in providing health information. For more information on becoming a Network member, see: http://nnlm.gov/scr/services/member.html.

Potential Course Subjects

Please consult the Educational Needs Questionnaire survey results, located at: http://nnlm.gov/scr/training/class_question_results.html or utilize other data collection tools to determine education needs. Potential courses could be developed on the following subjects (this list is not inclusive).

  • Evidence-based medicine for libraries
  • Marketing for libraries
  • Instructional design
  • Using evaluation to demonstrate value
  • Wireless applications

Funding

Two (2) $3,000 projects will be awarded. This award is intended to cover production of the course, an honorarium for creating the course, travel to teach the class two times within the SCR, and the cost for obtaining appropriate CE credit for the course.

Budget Guidelines

Personnel, food, and Indirect Costs are not allowed.

Period of Performance

Up to 12 months from date of the award. In this period of time, the course will be created, appropriate CE credit will be obtained, and the developer will teach the class a minimum of two times.

Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be scored against the following criteria:

  • Applicant’s expertise in subject area
  • Applicant’s previous experience in course development and teaching
  • Demonstrated need for the class
  • Course goals and objectives
  • Course content
  • Plans for evaluating the success of the course
  • Appropriate budget

Deliverables

One (1) semiannual progress report and one (1) final report will be required. The reports should include: activities conducted, problems encountered, and progress toward objectives.

Because training is a required aspect of this project, the subcontractor will complete a record of the event in the NN/LM online outreach activity and reporting (OARF) system within two weeks of the activity. The NN/LM SCR office will provide an instruction manual for inputting this information into the system.

The instructor is responsible for developing the course and all associated materials, obtaining relevant CE course approval, and teaching the course a minimum of two times during the period of performance. In addition to the aforementioned reporting requirements, the subcontractor shall provide copies of all communications, materials produced, press releases, advertisements, and articles for newsletters related to the project. A copy of all course content, including items such as agenda, presentation (using appropriate technology), handouts, and script, will be given to the NN/LM SCR.

Materials created under this award, funded by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), will not be eligible for copyright. By accepting the award, the subcontractor gives permission for use of all materials by the NLM and NN/LM. Course materials will be made available in the NN/LM National Training Center and Clearinghouse database (http://nnlm.gov/ntcc/).
