Program Description:

The N.A.S.A. Project is a 6-week summer program which takes place June 16 – July 26, 2008 for students attending Cleveland Metropolitan and Lorain County Schools who will be seventh or eighth graders in the Fall 2008. The program is designed to capture students’ interest in science and mathematics. Located in an urban setting, the N.A.S.A. Project seeks to target students who have a cumulative GPA between 2.0 and 3.0, demonstrating a deficiency in the areas of mathematics and science, and requiring a gentle push to reach their academic and life potential. The program is also designed to help prepare students for the Ohio Achievement Test by providing a weekly Scholastic Challenge Contest.

The program consists of weekly classroom meetings and computer classes which facilitate projects applying mathematics and scientific concepts and prepare students with innovative Ohio Achievement Test strategies. Additionally students will participate in a variety of enrichment activities such as field trips and tours, under the careful supervision of the N.A.S.A. Project staff. A unique component of this program is the Saturday parent-student workshops, designed to help the student and parent learn more about preparing for the Ohio Achievement Tests, financial literacy, and discovering new methods to control and create an environment supportive of his/her child’s development.

Student participants will meet Monday through Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Student participants and parents/guardians will meet on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Program Goal:

The goal of the N.A.S.A. Project is to increase the participation and success rate of students who are traditionally underrepresented in science and mathematics. Please be advised that while the program is open to all equally qualified candidates GRC is very interested in recruiting applicants who belong to a recognized underrepresented group, which includes females, African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders (natives of the Philippines, Guam, American Samoa, or Micronesia) and students with a disability.
