National Laboratories

National Laboratories
Scientists have performed thousands of studies at Yucca Mountain, at prestigious national laboratories such as Los Alamos, Sandia, Lawrence Livermore, and Lawrence Berkeley.

Those studies included:

  • surface-based testing and investigation

  • underground geologic mapping and testing

  • laboratory material testing and modeling

Sandia National Laboratories is the lead laboratory for integrating repository science work for the Yucca Mountain Project.

Many scientists from national laboratories also contribute to the OCRWM Science & Technology program.

This program explores technological improvements that could enhance the performance, safety, and efficiency of the repository at Yucca Mountain, and/or reduce the costs of the civilian radioactive waste management system.
