Native Seed Nursery

The Hoosier National Forest's Native Seed Nursery was established for a source of native seeds to be used in restoration projects on the forest. The area is comprised of several beds of different types of wildflowers. School groups assisted initially in germinating seeds and getting the area started. Today, much of the work is done with volunteers. If you enjoy gardening, we could use your help. We are looking for individuals, families, or groups to assist in the weeding and care of a native seed nursery located near Hardin Ridge Recreation Area. You can work as many or as few hours as you would like. The minimum age is 16. Please contact the Forest office (812-275-5987) if you are interested.

The photos below show the nursery in full bloom in the spring. The tall purple flowers are blazing stars, the shorter ones are swamp milkweed. This project was the recipient of an IPALCO Golden Eagle Award in 1995.
