Riparian

Picture of a rangelands riparian area. Despite the small proportion of the total rangeland landscape, riparian areas - the "green zones" between flowing water and uplands - are ecologically important from many perspectives. These include dissipating stream energy, filtering sediment, water retention, developing root masses, water quality, biological diversity, and wildlife and fisheries habitat.

The Forest Service also works with other agencies and organizations to manage rangelands riparian areas and protect water quality.
