尽管汽油的价格徘徊在每加仑2美元左右(这是2005年4月美国的平均汽油价格。编者注),但是广大美国人对大耗油量的运动型多功能车(SUV)和小卡车的热情一如既往。据美国能源信息管理局的数据,美国温室气体的排放量占全球排放量的25%,而轿车和轻型卡车却占了全国能源相关温室气体排放量的约20%。看来,为美国大众提供的汽车应该是省油而不污染环境,甚至连汽车爱好者杂志都将为之拍手叫好的那种汽车。它在价格上应该有竞争力,在操纵、性能、规格、安全性以及舒适度等方面要等同或优于传统的汽车。这真是太难了。但位于Colorado州Snowmass市的非营利机构落基山研究院(RMI)的首席执行管Amory
Lovins认为,他有可能制造出能满足这些要求的汽车--超级汽车。
Lovins超级汽车理念的最新版本是一个详尽的真实设计,展示了一种可以与当今中型、豪华、供初学者使用的赛车型多功能车相媲美的赛车型多功能车的变型车,它是由混合氢燃料电池驱动,它的绰号是"革命"。根据落基山研究院的大量模拟试验,"革命"能够达到美国环保局的里程率,即相当于每加仑汽油行驶108英里;使用像丰田Prius那样的汽油混合动力每加仑汽油行驶62英里;用性能优良的非混合燃料的汽油发动机,每加仑汽油行驶45英里。
以2000年的美元换算,汽油混合燃料型售价在40000~45000美元,利润颇丰。其定价是根据Lovins所称的该车组成部分82%的大量零部件供应商的报价、RMI整个模型设计费和尚未应用于生产的各种技术的咨询费。进一步开发后其售价可以降到大约35000美元。
但Lovins的理念已超出了运输的范畴。根据人口资料局的数据,汽车平均96%的时间是处于停驶的状态,而全国大量的燃料电池驱动的超级汽车处于停驶状态时就能为国家电力网做出巨大的贡献。根据RMI的计算,如果到2020年超级汽车占有全球一半的市场,则全球轿车和卡车二氧化碳的排放量将减少25%,而不是增加12%(这个估算是假定传统汽车的效率被提高25%,行驶的里程数增加50%)。
超级汽车遥遥无期吗?
Lovins认为超级汽车能够实现的伟大构想,在于他所讲的"重量减轻的滚雪球效应"。从根本上说,如果你通过将汽车的钢骨架换为合成纤维骨架而减少足够的重量,则汽车对动力的需求大为减少。发动机、传动装置、悬架全部可以更为精巧,使重量进一步降低。如此一来,动力转向和动力刹车系统可能已变得多余,因为汽车对这些系统的需求在很大程度上是由于汽车重量的缘故。五座的"革命"全重仅为1887磅,重量不及传统同类车型的一半,和本田两座铝制的Insight大致相当。Insight是美国市场上油耗最低的车型之一。
重量减轻的另一个优势是,现在的燃料电池非常昂贵。据《消费者报告》(Consumer Reports),2004年燃料电池的价格在19000元左右。人们普遍认为要20年后才能真正应用于汽车工业。但Lovins宣称:综合了轻便的车身、流线型设计以及低摩擦轮胎,"革命"只要用普通SUV在炎热天气空调运转所需的能量,就可以每小时55英里的速度行驶。那意味着"革命"所需要的燃料电池量仅是可比较的传统轻型货车所需量的1/3;另外现在可用于车载的氢储存罐一次充气可以使"革命"行驶330英里。

"革命"的动力传动装置包括一个35千瓦(47马力)的周压燃料电池,35千瓦的镍金属氢化物缓冲电池以及四个和车轮单级制动装置相连的电动发电机。电池可储存刹车时产生的能量,这意味着当你刹车的时候,发电机在刹车的同时给电池充电。这将为即刻加速、负载爬山以及其他爆发性的能量需求提供额外的动力。
"革命"比与之可比较的传统汽车重量轻,25%的重量减轻归因于碳纤维强化复合物构造的车体。碳纤维复合物的巨大强度使得汽车极为安全。超轻型碳纤维的一级方程式赛车在以每小时200英里的时速发生冲撞后,赛车手可以平安无恙地走出来。"革命"的设计使它与其2倍重量的车辆在以每小时30英里的时速发生正面对撞时,可以保护乘客免受严重的伤害。
与钢铁相比,每磅碳纤维结构可以轻松地吸收5倍以上的能量。金属通过弯曲和折叠来吸收碰撞的能量,1英尺铝管到它被完全压扁为止可有8重折叠。另一方面,碳纤维结构可维持显微裂纹,1英尺复合物可以维持10000条微裂纹,实质上每条微裂纹都代表着一个能量吸收单元。"革命"车体的前端是焊接成一体的铝质管状结构,其中也包括碳纤维复合物防冲撞结构;如此设计是为了发生冲撞后便于拆除或更换损坏的材料。
超级汽车的障碍
超级汽车的轻车身也带来了一些问题。一个必须解决的问题是汽车满载时总质量与空车质量的比率,该比率似应在1~1.5左右--与用于运输的小卡车相比,相差虽不悬殊,但如果也象小卡车那样采用传统的悬架,超级汽车空载行驶时会上下颠簸。
为了解决这一问题,超级汽车应装备"半主动悬架",该悬架由空气调节上升、下降。当需要的时候,空气压缩机可增加悬架的硬度。减振器是线性的传动器,可以调控使悬架软一点或硬一点,并可以在颠簸的路面行驶时充电。
碳纤维结构还面临着技术和经济难题。一个问题是用碳纤维铸造汽车部件所花费的时间较长。解决办法就是采用印模冲压热塑性复合物(一种碳纤维材料)的方法,该过程耗时不超过1~2分钟。首先,将复合物薄板加热,然后冲压、模压成型,该工艺流程与金属薄板模压成型类似。
"尽管如此,1~2分钟仍是太长的循环时间。"位于密执安州Ann Arbor市的汽车研究中心的主任David Cole说:"经济与生产效率紧密相连。生产工艺流程中任一环节的低产量将会使你不得不配备更多的机器与模具,这是真正需要关注的问题"。
"然而,速度并非一切。"Lovins说,"可以把复合物铸造成单个的合成部件,而复合物的生产方法更有利于生产合成部件。相反,金属合成部件通常是由几个相对简单形状的冲压部件焊接到一起以产生想要的复合形状。与传统的钢铁车身相比,"革命"车身所需的主要部件数量减少了65%,整辆车所需的部件比可类似的传统钢铁车身车辆减少了77%;模压合成部件与钢铁部件相比,冲压金属部件所需的模具是模压合成部件的4倍"。Lovins又说,"另外,合成部件已有色彩模压,不再需要喷漆处理。
Lovins坚信:从资本量来看,即使与当今最节省的汽车制造工厂相比,"革命"的这些特点将使资本密集型的汽车制造所需的资本量减少2/5。根据RMI 2004年的报告《在石油危机中取胜》(Winning
the Oil Endgame),一旦你综合考虑"革命" 装配更简单、无需喷漆车间以及格外小巧的驱动系统,则每辆超级汽车的额外成本支出大概为零。

Cole看到了超级汽车的理念有一些经济上和文化上的障碍,但是这些问题没有一个是不能解决的。除了制造这种车辆在经济上的意义外,这些难题还包括缺少能处理碳纤维复合物的修车行,而且汽车制造业已在传统生产线投入了大量资本。"汽车工业要亲眼目睹才肯相信。"Cole说,"生产商只想看到真正的超级汽车。"他说,"如果Amory所言不虚,整个世界将会发生巨变。"
氢的转化
如果氢燃料动力汽车的价值走出运输的范畴,就可能会加速它们被采用的步伐。"加州大学戴维斯分校运输研究院的研究员、博士生Brett Williams分析。这些汽车能为能源公司提供"旋转的能量"--该词汇来源于产生能量的涡轮脱离栅极旋转的现象。
Williams说:"当驾车人上班工作的时候,这些汽车可以与电网栅格相连接,车主人甚至可以将他们的汽车停放在特殊的发电停车场,其汽车可作为发电机工作而收取费用。"
选择这种交通工具常被问及的一个难题就是汽车和加油站的问题,即鸡与蛋的问题--你不可能拥有氢燃料汽车而没有氢燃料添加站,你也不可能有加油站而没有汽车。对于这个难题,Lovins指出了一个自筹经费的方案,该方案是他和Williams在1999年第十届年度全国氢联合会上提出,并在他们名为《氢转化的策略》(A
