Office of Community Services -- Asset Building Strengthening Families..Building Communities

Curriculum Modules

The Office of Community Services has worked with Assets for Independence Projects and experts in asset building and training to develop a curriculum for the AFI Demonstration Program and for the asset-building field as a whole. The six current modules listed below address operational issues critical to AFI Project success or provide an overview of the asset-building approach that underlies the AFI Demonstration Program. The content, illustrations, and exercises embedded in each module draw on actual experience of AFI Projects, as well as on research, and a wide range of technical and training resources. In addition, the Office of Community Services has worked with experienced trainers to develop facilitator notes for each module.

The module topics below contain three components: a workbook suitable for use by training participants, a slide presentation that tracks the workbook and that may be used in group training and facilitator notes. Modules have been "road tested" and modified based on their use at AFI training academies. The Office of Community Services encourages those working in the asset-building field to draw on these modules to increase the effectiveness of staff and organizations engaged in this work. The topics and much of the content are relevant to IDA initiatives outside the AFI Demonstration Program.

OCS and the AFI Program, would appreciate hearing about use of these materials in the field and welcome any suggestions to improve the modules. To share experience in using the curriculum, please contact the AFI Program at: afiprogram@acf.hhs.gov; or call the program office at: 202-401-4626.
