Global Trade Comes Home: Community Impacts of Goods Movement Global Trade Comes Home: Community Impacts of Goods Movement

Andrea Hricko

Abstract

Although global trade can have economic benefits for the nations involved, the environmental health of communities located along goods movement routes is often negatively impacted by pollution from the diesel ships, trains, and trucks used to move freight. Spurred in part by community and environmental advocates, governments are beginning to take action to reduce toxic exposures created through goods movement. Such efforts are being supported by new research findings and by community-oriented meetings that have raised awareness of the health and environmental justice issues created by goods movement.
