Indi-GENE-ous Conflict Indi-GENE-ous Conflict

Charles W. Schmidt

Abstract

With the genomic era in full swing, scientists are interested in cataloging genetic variation among indigenous groups and studying their susceptibility to chronic diseases to gain important insights into the genetic component of diseases. Many American Indians see human genomics as a science that challenges the spiritual basis of their existence, and they are suspicious of geneticists and biotechnologies they believe may exploit their genes and other sacred life-forms for commercial gain. New efforts are being made to study the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic research, with an eye toward enhanced donor control over samples as they make their way through the scientific community and better cultural awareness among researchers.
