Breaking the Code: Predicting Where Disease Will Strike Breaking the Code: Predicting Where Disease Will Strike

Tim Lougheed

Abstract

A new model for determining disease outbreaks takes advantage of the volumes of daily electronic medical record data now available to researchers to help pinpoint where outbreaks of infectious disease begin. The model uses space-time permutation scan statistics to spot anomalous clusters of disease over week-or-shorter blocks of time. The model precludes needing to know the underlying population breakdown and instead compares observed to expected numbers of disease cases, generating signals for follow-up by public health officials.
