Mycotoxins: of Molds and Maladies Julia R. Barrett Abstract From the beginning of organized crop production through present-day agriculture, mycotoxins--toxic secondary metabolites of fungi--have presented health risks to both human and animal populations, including pain, convulsions, hallucinations, respiratory effects, and death. Research into these compounds and their effects over the past several decades has shown the mycotoxins to be an extremely diverse group of compounds. Until recently, concern was focused primarily on dietary and occupational exposures, but with growing attention to the problems associated with indoor molds and respiratory exposures, researchers are recognizing that the potential scope of mycotoxin exposures is broader than originally suspected.
