As China's economy continues to grow at a dizzying rate, so do its environmental and energy concerns. The industries behind this economic boom, operated unchecked, have left China's water, air, and land in severely degraded condition. But the growth of an environmental infrastructure over the past three decades is allowing China to begin serious remediation efforts. Most recently the central government's latest Five Year Plan for the economy has devoted an unprecedented US$85 billion to environmental provisions. The extent to which China's government follows through on the environmental promise remains to be seen, however.
