Constructed Wetlands: Borrowing a Concept from Nature Abstract As both developed countries (with their aging waster and sanitation infrastructures) and developing countries (with their rapidly urbanizing populations) struggle to provide their citizens with safe drinking water, the idea of constructed wetlands, a strikingly low-tech option for cleaning up water polluted by mining waste, agricultural runoff, and human waste, is beginning to attract attention around the world. Although the basic concept behind constructed wetlands--hat areas such as marshes and other wetlands can be highly effective in filtering harmful and otherwise unwanted pollutants from water--is almost as old as the Earth itself, the implementation of these relatively cheaper and more visually pleasing means of cleaning water is just beginning to catch on with private and public sanitation engineers.
