Biogas: A Bright Idea for Africa Biogas: A Bright Idea for Africa

Valerie J. Brown

Abstract

Biogas technology harnesses the natural process of decomposition to convert biological waste (such as human excretia and abattoir waste) into methane-rich gas. Many experts consider the technology to be an excellent tool for improving life, livelihoods, and health in the developing world. Biodigester do more than simply provide fuel for cooking, heat, and lighting--they also improve sanitation, reduce greenhouse gases from biomass burning, reduce the demand for wood and charcoal, and provide a high-quality organic fertilizer. Perhaps most importantly for developing nations, biogas also burns more cleanly than combustible biomass, which means better indoor air quality.
