The industries behind this economic boom, operated unchecked, have left China's water, air, and land in severely degraded condition. But the growth of an environmental infrastructure over the past three decades is allowing China to begin serious remediation efforts. Most recently the central government's latest Five Year Plan for the economy has devoted an unprecedented US$85 billion to environmental provisions.
