Environment: California Out in Front Environment: California Out in Front

Abstract

Environmentalism is a powerful force in California, and its legislature has passed some of the strongest environmental laws enacted to date. For example, whereas the U.S. government has yet to regulate carbon dioxide, California recently passed a groundbreaking law that directs industries to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions by 25% over the next 13 years. This year, California will consider a green chemistry policy centered on identifying safer chemicals and processes in reaction to a report that concluded that federal policies are insufficient to protect public health. Coming from one of the world's largest economies, these legislative efforts have impressive clout both nationally and globally.
