A Spreading Concern: Inhalational Health Effects of Mold Bob Weinhold Abstract Several prominent cases of mold contamination in buildings have drawn the media spotlight, but there is still disagreement about the nature of the inhalational health effects of mold. As recently as 25 years ago, inhaled mold was considered primarily a nuisance, not a health threat. But the growing scientific and medical evidence suggests the threat is widespread, and can be serious for some people. The building design and construction industries are beginning to recognize that their efforts are critical in preventing mold problems. Policy makers are still a long way from being able to set mold exposure and remediation standards, but some industry groups are working to develop such guidelines for their members.
