Low Water Consumption: A New Goal for Coal Lance Frazer Abstract Around the world, coal is an abundant fuel for electric power, but burning coal for power requires large quantities of water. However, coal itself may contain a great deal of water ; some coals are more than two-thirds water. Researchers at the University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center are investigating the use of commercial desiccant technology, already used at facilities such as ice rinks, as a way to capture and use water within coal that escapes through the stack. This captured water could offset a plant’s external water needs. It is also possible that capturing excess water in flue gas may help reduce the formation of certain pollutants that are commonly associated with coal-fired power plants.
