Saving the Earth from Space Saving the Earth from Space

Rebecca Clay

Abstract

Eye in the sky. The ERS-2 satellite (above) monitors the earth day and night under all weather conditions, thanks to its radars, which can pierce cloud cover.

In April 2001, the Paris-based European Space Agency announced four initiatives to help countries better use satellite-gathered environmental data in the implementation and enforcement of international treaties on the environment. These initiatives focus on the satellite monitoring of changes in wetlands, carbon dioxide levels, marine pollution, and desertification in response to international treaties addressing those areas. In January 2002, the European Space Agency plans to launch Envisat, its most powerful environmental satellite ever, which will monitor the atmosphere, ocean, land, and ice over a five-year period.
