Putting People to the Test Bob Weinhold Abstract When the complex reactions of humans to harmful substances can't be evaluated any other way, deliberate exposures have been justified for certain research. However, concerns about human studies are surfacing in the wake of news reports of deaths among human subjects. Government agencies and researchers in the United States and around the world have begun to respond by investigating how such studies are performed and by proposing a series of recommendations for change. Meanwhile, the parameters guiding the use of human subjects are described by insiders as "a morass." If researchers do continue to use human test subjects, experts believe government oversight needs to keep improving, and that investigators need to abide by rules as they develop.
