Trampling Paradise: Dream Vacation--Environmental Nightmare? Trampling Paradise: Dream Vacation--Environmental Nightmare?

David J. Tenenbaum

Abstract

Directly and indirectly, tourism harms the very coral reefs, savannas, beaches, and forests that lure so many tourists away from home in the first place. The damage comes in the form of noise, air, and water pollution, the usurpation of productive land, and the disruption of local cultures, economies, and ecosystems. Because so many tourists are attracted to natural, unspoiled destinations, environmental degradation also costs the tourism industry directly by leading to the decline of once popular areas. Ecotourism, sometimes called sustainable tourism, may provide a means for vacationers to travel in a more environmentally friendly way.
