Abstract

Current methods for sterilizing medical and dental instruments can be harsh on both the instruments themselves and the environment. So two Georgia researchers are are proposing cavitation as a safer, more sustainable sterilization method. Cavitation is the application of acoustic energy to a liquid to create bubbles, which release energy as they collapse. Experiments to date combining cavitation with increased hydrostatic pressure in an antimicrobial solution have yielded a bacterial kill rate of 90% within 1 minute.
