Kansas Disaster Housing Assistance Tops 1.5 Million

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Just 11 days after President Clinton declared Kansas a federal disaster area, more than $1.5 million in disaster housing assistance has been paid to victims of the severe storms and flooding that occurred between October 30 and November 15, according to state and federal disaster recovery officials.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) report that 587 families and individuals have received assistance totaling $1,839,622. This assistance helps disaster victims with needs such as paying rent for alternate short-term housing and for minimal repairs that will make their homes livable.
"We are really pleased that money has been able to get out quickly to Kansans who've suffered from the severe storms and flooding," said Carol Coleman, FEMA federal coordinating officer.
Coleman added, "Our housing inspections also have been going quickly. In most cases, we have been completing inspections 3 or 4 days after a homeowner registers."
State of Kansas Public Affairs Officer, Joy Moser, urged Kansans who haven't yet registered to call the federal/state toll-free registration number 1-800-462-9029. People with hearing or speech impairments may call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Registrations can be made between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., CDT, Monday through Friday.
"The sooner people apply, the quicker we can get them some help," Moser said. "The goal of this disaster operation is to get people on the road to recovery as soon as possible."
