KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte Counties have been designated for federal disaster assistance in two separate disasters.

Damage resulting from severe storms and flooding occurring between October 1 and October 8 qualified the above counties for inclusion in President Clinton's October 14, 1998, disaster declaration. For administrative purposes, this disaster is designated DR-1254-KS and all releases and advisories pertaining to it are numbered 1254-xxx.

The severe storms and flooding that occurred between October 30 and November 15 qualified the above counties for inclusion in President Clinton's November 5, 1998, disaster declaration. For administrative purposes, this disaster is designated DR-1258-KS. All releases and advisories pertaining to it are numbered 1258-xxx, as this one is.

Homeowners, renters, farmers, agricultural producers, and business owners who sustained damage as a result of the severe storms and flooding during the period October 1 through October 8, or during the period October 30 through November 15, should register with FEMA for assistance.

It takes about a 15 minute phone call to the FEMA toll-free teleregistration number: 1-800-462-9029. TTY service is available at 1-800-462-7585 for anyone who is hearing or speech impaired. Currently, the registration numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (CST), Monday through Friday, until further notice.
