2007 AIDS Community Outreach Projects Funded

In September, 2007, the National Library of Medicine made funding awards for the 14th round of AIDS Community Information Outreach Projects. Since the beginning of this program in 1994, NLM has continued its HIV/AIDS-related outreach efforts to community-based organizations, patient advocacy groups, faith-based organizations, state and local departments of health, and libraries, including public libraries. The program is designed to support local efforts for improving information access for HIV/AIDS patients and the affected community as well as their caregivers. Emphasis is on providing information or access in a way meaningful to the target community. (more…)

CDCynergy — A New Training Opportunity for a Health Communications Tool

After four years of working with CDCynergy, a health communications tool developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) convened a Train-the-Trainer workshop on August 24-25, 2005, at the National Library of Medicine.

Rx for Survival — PBS Television Series and Engagement Campaign, November 1-3, 2005

Editor’s Note: This article was submitted to us by Keith Cogdill, Outreach Librarian from NLM’s NN/LM National Network Office. It describes a six-part PBS television series on public health concerns that will air on November 1-3, 2005. The article outlines specific suggestions for how Network member libraries might collaborate with their local television stations. Two stations from the Pacific Southwest Region are leading coalitions in this effort; they are KVIE, Sacramento, CA, and KPBS, San Diego, CA. NLM Releases Web Page on Environmental Concerns Related to Hurricane Katrina

The National Library of Medicine’s Specialized Information Services Division has compiled a new Hurricane Katrina web page, http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/enviro/hurricane.html, on toxic chemical and environmental health information resources for health workers and the interested public. Links are provided to information on chemicals that may be released as a result of the Katrina disaster and on environmental health concerns following the wind and flood damage. (more…)

$3.68 Million Grant to Boost Public Health “Informatics”

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) will administer a $3.68 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to develop tomorrow’s public health leaders in the science of public health informatics.
