Hoyer Statement on Senate Passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform

"It Is Critical that President Bush Exert Leadership, and Dispense With the Punitive House Republican Approach"

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate passed a comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform bill:

   "The comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform bill passed today by the Senate is certainly not perfect legislation.  However, the Senate bill clearly is preferable to the draconian and punitive legislative approach adopted in December by House Republicans, who for the first time ever would make millions of undocumented immigrants felons and those who help them subject to criminal penalties.

   "I believe there is virtually unanimous agreement in the Congress that we must secure our borders and know who is entering our country.  The Senate bill takes an important step in the right direction in securing our borders, while also keeping American families together and offering businesses the employees they need to thrive.

   "As the process moves forward, it is critical that President Bush exert strong leadership and dispense with the unrealistic, enforcement-only approach of House Republicans.  The fact is, House Republicans stand virtually isolated in this important debate, while the President, a bipartisan majority in the Senate and an overwhelming majority of House Democrats continue to advocate comprehensive legislation.

   "Today's vote in the Senate sends should be a wake-up call for the right-wing of the Republican Party that its misguided views are out of step with the American people."

WASHINGTON, DC - El Coordinador Demócrata de la Cámara de Representantes, el Congresista Steny H. Hoyer (MD) emitió el siguiente comunicado después de que el Senado aprobó el día de ayer una propuesta integral de inmigración:

    "La propuesta integral de reforma migratoria adoptada de manera bipartidista el día de ayer en el Senado no es, ciertamente, un proyecto de ley perfecto.  Sin embargo, la propuesta del Senado es claramente preferible a la dañina y rigorista propuesta adoptada en Diciembre por los Republicanos de la Cámara, quienes proponen criminalizar a los inmigrantes indocumentados y a aquellos que les ayuden de cualquier manera.

    "Existe en el Congreso un acuerdo casi unánime de que debemos proteger nuestras fronteras y de que debemos saber quien entra a nuestro país.  Y el proyecto del Senado es un paso en la dirección correcta para poder proteger nuestras fronteras, y a la misma vez mantener a nuestras familias unidas y ofrecerle a nuestros empleadores los trabajadores que necesitan para salir adelante.

    "El proceso legislativo sigue su marcha, y es muy importante que el Presidente Bush tome el liderazgo en su partido y se deshaga de la dañina propuesta aprobada por los Republicanos de la Cámara de Representantes.  El hecho es que los Republicanos en la Cámara estan virtualmente aislados en este debate, mientras que el Presidente, la mayoría del Senado, y casi todos los Demócratas de la Cámara mantienen una postura en favor de una propuesta integral.

    "El voto de ayer en el Senado es una llamada de atención a la extrema-derecha del Partido Republicano de que su postura tan radical no encaja con el resto de la nación."
