Sunday, June 29th, 2008

This collection of open access articles, which includes highlights for quick reference and a topic summary, reflects the arduous work of experts in animal disaster preparedness and response who have grappled with the central questions involved and offered their findings and recommendations within the covers of the AVMA scientific journals. Areas discussed include:

  • the veterinarian’s role in preparedness and response;
  • biosecurity and bioterrorism preparedness;
  • search-and-rescue dogs; and
  • preparedness and response policy.

Use this direct link: http://www.avma.org/avmacollections/disaster/default.asp

This is available for personal and scholarly use as single-copy downloads and links to the collection are encouraged, but articles should not be further reproduced or distributed at web sites other than that of the AVMA. Breeze Recordings May Not Work - Upgrade Your Flash Plug-in

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

We have heard from Adobe Connect technical support that there is a problem with the audio when an older version of Flash is used. If you have tried to listen to an archived Breeze session and it sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks are talking, here is what Adobe suggests:

After further examination, we have determined that customers running a version of Flash older than 9.0.115 would receive accelerated audio when viewing the Adobe Connect (Breeze) recordings below. To resolve this issue, we recommend upgrading Flash Player to the latest version (9.0.124) to hear all Connect recordings at their normal pace.

Adobe Flash Player is available at no cost from http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-FLASH

Please let us know if this does not resolve your problem. Thanks! [sd and rb]

Enhancing Peer Review at NIH

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a longstanding history of supporting the most promising and meritorious biomedical and behavioral research using a broad range of approaches, strategies and mechanisms. While the first-rate and world renowned peer review system is a cornerstone of NIH, the increasing breadth, complexity, and interdisciplinary nature of modern research has created many challenges. In June 2007, the NIH Director established two working groups to examine the NIH peer review process. Read more about this process at http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/ [scb]
