Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (D-CA) former co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues delivered the following statement about the Supreme Court decision Gonzales v. Carhart:
“The Supreme Court’s decision to curtail a woman’s right to choose ignores years of precedent and puts a woman’s health at risk in favor of partisan politics. These decisions are best made by medical professionals, not politicians or special interests. We need to respect the decisions of women and their doctors and keep the federal government out of such intensely personal and individualized situations.
“We need to do more on a federal level to expand efforts to prevent unintended pregnancies, especially in communities of color where over 50 percent of young women will become pregnant at least once before the age of 20. Unintended pregnancy has risen by 29% in recent years among low-income women. The President, the previous Republican Congress and now the Supreme Court have all ignored these statistics and instead limited women’s reproductive health options.
“I strongly oppose the Supreme Court’s decision and am proud to cosponsor the Freedom of Choice Act which would write into law the protection of a woman’s right to choose.”
