(Washington, DC) - Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Immigration Subcommitte Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff urging him to clarify the Department's guidance on security-related issues that prevent many refugees, asylees, and other non-citizens in this country from gaining permanent residency. Specifically, the lawmakers asked for information concerning a March 27, 2008 memorandum issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and added, "While we applaud the steps taken in this guidance, we continue to be concerned at the continuing failure of the Department to implement its statutory authority to exempt deserving individuals from such bars to admission."
