Abstract

Wave and tidal energy technologies, known collectively as "marine energy," tap a clean and bountiful resource long used by man for power, though not on the scale now sought for the sake of reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Today, numerous countries around the world are poised to make marine energy a source of large-scale energy production using a variety of technologies. Industry insiders believe that costs for marine energy could eventually be less than those for wind energy. As tidal and wave energy options multiply, developers are working to ensure that projects do not impact sea life and to negotiate the regulatory obstacles that exist in some areas.
