A Message from the Editor

June 26, 2008

The 2008 Leaders-to-Leaders Conference will be held July 8–9 in Washington D.C. A group of representatives from business, government, education, non-profit, sports, entertainment, and faith-based sectors will get the opportunity to make a positive difference in the health of Americans by voicing their ideas on actionable policies, strategies, and the uses of innovative technologies.

The forum will engage chief executives and organizational leaders in a national dialogue to freely explore and offer recommendations on how to transform the US health system in ways that substantially improve the health of all Americans. The theme, "Shaping Policy for a Healthier Nation," articulates the goals of the conference which are to

  • Identify policies and actions that will have the greatest likelihood of improving the health of Americans along with what it will take to "bring them to life";
  • Generate actionable ideas to encourage Americans to take steps to prevent disease; and
  • Determine specific mechanisms to continue information sharing and collaboration around local, state, regional, and national efforts to transform the health system through policy development and implementation.

Some of the conference participants include CDC Director Julie L. Gerberding, MD, MPH; Gail C. Christopher, PhD, DN, Vice President for Health, W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Mr. Ron Sims, County Executive, King County, Washington; Mr. Richard Edelman, President and CEO, Edelman Public Relations; and Brent Ridge, PhD, VP of Healthy Aging, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Webcasting will be available for all conference events.

CDC History

June 23, 1989: MMWR reported that outbreaks of staphylococcal food-borne disease were associated with consumption of canned mushrooms from the People's Republic of China (PRC). These outbreaks prompted multistate recalls of certain PRC mushrooms and an FDA prohibition. From 1982 to 1987, 75 confirmed cases of staphylococcal outbreaks were reported to CDC's national food-borne surveillance system.
