Affordable, Low-Carbon Diesel Fuel from Domestic Coal and Biomass [PDF-4.8MB] (Jan 2009)
This study evaluates how the conversion of coal and/or biomass into liquid transportation fuels could be used as a near-term pathway to concurrently address our nation's key energy-related objectives:  energy supply security, economic sustainability, and mitigation of global climate change.

NETL Test Protocol Testing of Hydrogen Separation Membranes
The NETL Test Protocol for Testing of Hydrogen Separation Membranes [PDF-450KB] (Oct 2008) was developed to determine the performance of hydrogen separation membranes for use in a gasification-based process to produce hydrogen from coal. The Test Protocol enables NETL to clearly state expectations to contractors and compare hydrogen separation membranes on a common basis.

Fossil Energy Hydrogen Program Plan
This FE Hydrogen Program Plan [PDF-1.6 MB] (June 2003) focuses on the research, development and demonstration (RD&D) activities that are required to develop advanced hydrogen production, storage and delivery technologies from fossil fuels. The result of these activities will improve current technology and make available new, innovative technology that can produce and deliver affordable hydrogen from natural gas and coal with significantly reduced or near-zero emissions.

Hydrogen from Coal Program
The Hydrogen from Coal Program RD&D Plan 2008 [PDF-2.9MB] (Sept 2008) supports the President’s Advanced Energy Initiative, Hydrogen Fuel Initiative and the restructured FutureGen project through joint public and private RD&D of advanced and novel hydrogen-related technologies for the future hydrogen energy system.

Hydrogen Posture Plan
The Hydrogen Posture Plan [PDF-2MB] (Feb 2004) was prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) in response to a directive by Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.

Mitretek Report
This Mitretek Report [PDF-452KB] (July 2004) examines current and advanced technologies to produce hydrogen from coal. The performance and economics of these technologies are analyzed including configurations for carbon sequestration. For comparison, the economics of producing hydrogen from natural gas and photovoltaic (PV)/water electrolysis are included.

Multi-Year Research, Development, and Demonstration Plan
The Office of Fossil Energy has developed its Hydrogen from Coal Multi-Year Research, Development, and Demonstration Plan [PDF-2.7MB] (June 2004) to address recent DOE and Administration policy and program initiatives on hydrogen.

National Hydrogen Vision
The National Hydrogen Vision [PDF-1MB] (Nov 2001) process was initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy, in partnership with key hydrogen energy and transportation organizations to address areas of agreement and disagreement about hydrogen's role in America's energy future, to establish a timeframe in which a hydrogen economy may be realized, and to discuss alternative pathways to achieve the vision.

National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap
The National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap [PDF-2MB] (Nov 2002) outlines key issues and challenges in hydrogen energy development and suggests paths that government and industry can take to expand use of hydrogen-based energy. Hydrogen offers the long-term potential for an energy system that produces near-zero emissions and is based on domestically available resources.
