Messenger from the White House: Council on Environmental Quality Charles W. Schmidt Abstract Since its inception more than 30 years ago, the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) has seen its influence vary greatly depending on the environmental agenda of the president holding office. Under the current administration, the CEQ fills primarily advisory and coordination roles. Supporters of a more potent CEQ question whether the council is fulfilling its mandate and obligations ; those on the other side of this controversial issue question whether our evolved environmental agencies even require the CEQ's oversight.
