Wood Import Pest Risk Assessments

About the Team

logs for export being loaded on shipThe Wood Import and Pest Risk Assessment and Mitigation Evaluation Team (WIPRAMET) provides a permanent source of USDA Forest Service technical expertise to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on exotic forest pests that may move with logs, chips, and similar green wood products. There is interest in importing large volumes of logs, wood chips, and similar green wood products into the United States. This has led to concern that the shipments might contain foreign pests that could threaten the health of the forests of the United States. The USDA Forest Service cooperates with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service by providing technical assistance in conducting pest risk assessments of potential green wood commodity importations into the United States.

A core team was established by the USDA Forest Service in 1995 to provide pest risk assessments to USDA APHIS. Additional team members are added to meet the requirements and needs for a specific pest risk assessment. The team follows the protocols outlined by the Rules and Regulations for Importation of Logs, Lumber, and Other Unmanufactured Wood Articles (Title 7, CFR 319.40-11) and by standard ISPM 11 of the International Plant Protection Convention of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
